Taking ME 398 (More Information)

HPS is open to all UW students regardless of major or prior experience. We accept new members at the beginning of Fall and Winter quarter. All members who apply are free to join a subteam (technical, support, or both) of their choice.

If you have any questions or would like to attend a general meeting before applying, contact us.

Application

Frequently Asked Questions

We hope the application process is easy and streamlined. It’s hard to give an exact estimate because it’s dependent on the work you put into the short response questions and whether you have a resume already prepared. Once submitted, the process involves a lot of waiting until your 10 min interview and decisions.

How long is the application process?

1

The interviews are a short and informal 10 min discussion with you, possibly the technical lead of a subteam you are interested in, and maybe other HPS leadership. The only way you should prepare is to understand what you want to accomplish in HPS and why. There is no technical component.

What can I expect in the Interview?

2

Although it’s not preferred, if you are unavailable for the week of interviews (Oct 12th-16th) we can schedule a virtual interview. If that is also not possible, please contact us when interview offers are sent out.

What if I can’t make it to the interview?

How Do I find the subteam for me?

4

Everyone has different interests. HPS does a wide variety of things (even within subteams). The subteams page is a useful resource to find descriptions of subteams but attending our informational meeting on Oct 5th will give you the ability to talk to technical leads. You may also change subteams in future quarters if you wish.

Why can I only pick two subteams?

5

To ensure that all members are active and can take ownership of systems within the sub, we restrict members to only two subteams per quarter. With that said, we don’t necessarily recommend being in two subteams, it can be more meaningful to take a larger, more active role in one subteam.

What is ME 398? Why is it Required?

6

ME 398 is a requirement of membership in any Mechanical Engineering RSO. It is a one credit class with no meetings or requirements other than those imposed on the clubs that you are apart of. You can sign up for it like any other class in MyUW and you must pay the $250 course fee for every quarter you are active.
