Access our New Member Application here or email uwhpsub@gmail.com. We accept new members for the first three weeks of Autumn and Winter quarter, and are open to all majors and interests. No prior engineering knowledge or experience is required.
-
While we don’t track hours per week, members will be expected to complete their assigned tasks thoroughly and on time. Generally our members put in upwards of 2-3 hours per week depending on their assignments — during the manufacturing quarter, some members spend 10-15 hours per week in the machine shop!
-
After joining, members have their choice of any of our six technical teams: Controls, Drivetrain, Hull, Electronics, Propulsion, and Safety. You can join whichever team best suits your interests — some members even join more than one! These teams generally have 5-20 students each, with the team lead and the more experienced members advising and providing weekly tasks for the newer members.
Members may also have the ability to join one of our three support teams: Dive, Business, and Manufacturing.
-
While technical skills vary by sub team, our members learn SolidWorks CAD design, ANSYS for CFD, Open Prop, lathe, and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining. Additionally, members get the chance to hone soft skills including teamwork, communication of technical ideas, and time management.
-
The sky’s the limit! Our members often find internships or jobs at our sponsors’ firms, including UW’s Advanced Physics Laboratory, Glosten Marine Engineering, and Janicki Industries. But employers love the leadership and hands-on experience that is unique to an engineering club like UWHPS, so members find success in a variety of fields.

If you’re under 5’6” and willing to become SCUBA certified — Yes! We usually have 1 primary pilot and 1-2 backup pilots per year, along with a team of American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) certified safety divers. Our pilots and divers first get their PADI or NAUI Open Water Certifications before being trained through HPS as AAUS Scientific Divers.
-
Yes! HPS typically sponsors up to eight new divers per year to complete the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) Scientific Diver course. Divers are required to be Open-Water Certified prior to beginning their Scientific Diving certification. New divers must complete twelve dives with the UW Diving Safety Officer to complete the course.
In general HPS can provided limited numbers of general gear like BCDs, cylinders, weights, and regulators. Personal gear like exposure protection (wetsuit or dry suit), fins, and masks must be provided by each individual diver.

We take team leads, safety divers, and other essential/outstanding members. If you are interested in attending the competition, work hard throughout the year and express interest to your lead.
